UBC Undergraduate/Graduate Academic Assistant positions – “Anti-Palestinian Racism in the Canadian Academy” project

The Middle East Studies (MES) program invites applications for an undergraduate and a graduate academic assistant (UAA or GAA) to support the “Anti-Palestinian Racism in the Canadian Academy” project, funded through a grant from the 2024 Strategic Equity & Anti-Racism Enhancement (StEAR) Fund.

Duration: December 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025
Hours: a total of 80 hours
Salary: UAA $21.25/hour | GAA $23.80/hour
There are a total of two (2) positions funded through the StEAR grant

Duties: The students will work closely with the chair of the MES Program.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

  • conducting research and producing written materials for a report or module on Anti-Palestinian Racism at UBC and Canadian universities at large
  • attending and participating in the events/talks organized throughout the project duration
  • contributing to the event organization and management
  • participating in regular project meetings with the supervising faculty

Qualifications: These positions are best suited to upper-level undergraduate or graduate students from any faculty at UBC. We seek candidates with the following qualifications:

  • Be excellent researchers and writers
  • Have some prior knowledge of Anti-Palestinian Racism (APR) as a concept
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines

Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Have prior research and/or writing work experience
  • Have taken courses or have experience working on issues related to Palestine, anti-racism, academic freedom, critical university studies, and/or related subjects and fields
  • Can commit to the project deadlines
  • Have experience with event organization and management

Students must be registered full-time during the term(s) they will serve as UAA/GAA and be legally entitled to work in Canada. The successful applicant must physically reside in British Columbia for the duration of their appointment as UAA/GAA.
