Read what some of our current students and recent alumni have to say about the program:

“Being a student in the MES program has been one of the highlights of my undergraduate degree, as it has introduced me to so many different opportunities that have greatly enriched my time at UBC. Because it is a small program, I have been able to work closely with my professors in ways that I often wasn’t able to in my other courses. In my final year, I was able to participate in a directed reading course and do my own research project as an undergrad. Additionally, because it is a new program, for one of the first times in my degree, I felt like I had a say in shaping the program for future students through discussions with professors and getting involved in the student association.  It has also complemented my IR major well, as I have been able to apply and expand the concepts I learned in IR courses to the regional focus of the Middle East.”

Coming to UBC, I knew exactly what I wanted to major and minor in. Graduating with a major in International Relations and minor in Middle East Studies went beyond the titles, it was an incredible experience that taught me how to better think critically. The approach MES took to the study, prompted me to question my foundational thinking and developed greater meaning to my education. The professors offered new perspectives to thinking about the region and its vast instersectionalities with the world. I believe the skills I learned from MES are imperative to everyone hoping to engage in varying disciplines such as public policy and international affairs.
