Human Rights and Social Justice in Mental Health Work: Lessons from Palestine

 

 

 

Abstract: Join us for this important conversation with renowned psychiatrist, Dr. Samah Jabr. Speaking against the depoliticization of mental health work, Dr. Jabr will discuss the dire need to integrate social justice and human rights approaches into psychological and psychotherapeutic models of treatment. The conversation will impart important lessons from Palestine on how we can re-conceptualize mental health work to both affirm the right to health and better heal individuals and communities that experience genocide, settler colonialism, and other traumas.

 

Speaker Bio: Born in East Jerusalem, Dr. Samah Jabr is a Palestinian psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and writer. Dr. Jabr is Chair of the Mental Health Unit at the Palestinian Ministry of Health and Medical Director for the Palestinian Medical Education Initiative. In addition to teaching at numerous Palestinian universities, they are a supervisor at the George Washington University, a fellow at the Centre for Science and Policy at the University of Cambridge, and work as a consultant for the United Nations, Save the Children and Doctors Without Borders (MSF). They are a prolific public scholar with numerous publications, public lectures and interviews. They were also the focus of the award-winning film, Beyond the Frontlines: Tales of Resistance and Resilience in Palestine.
