High-achieving upper-level undergraduate students are invited to apply to take MES 450 in 2022-23. Students do NOT need to be MES minor students but must have previously taken or be taking MES 300 in 2022W.
MES450 is a year-long directed study course. Working in a small cohort, students will be supervised in writing a polished 7500-10,000-word research paper to be presented at the 2023 Middle East & Islamic Consortium (MEICON) Student Conference and submitted for publication in an undergraduate journal. Alternative projects can be considered. All papers must focus on the Middle East (broadly construed) and/or Islam in some capacity.
To apply for the course, please submit the following to Professor Pheroze Unwalla (pheroze.unwalla@ubc.ca):
1) A 350-500 word proposal detailing what topic they would like to focus on. This is not set in stone. A student can change their mind later. I more want to see that students have a good sense of where they want to go and are putting some thought into the project
2) A writing sample from a course. This should be your best work but also a larger essay.
The deadline is August 6th, 2022. The course is only for high-achieving upper-level undergraduate students who are ready to take on a major project.
